Maresciallo inglese. Si distinse nella guerra anglo-boera (1899-1902); nella prima guerra mondiale fu comandante supremo delle truppe inglesi fino al dicembre 1915; dal 1918 al 1921 fu viceré dell'Irlanda (Ripple, Kent 1852 - Deal Castle Kent 1925).
